On ”Synthwave Sessions Vol. 1” – a fully electronic EP – De Arma delve deeper into their penchant for 80s synth music. As indicated by the title, this is the first instalment in a series of upcoming singles.

Even if the musical execution of the “Synthwave Sessions” differs significantly from De Arma’s past output, the core feeling remains firmly rooted in the sound that the duo has established over the years. The songs rest on a swirling foundation of immersive rhythms and evocative melodies – all woven together into a sonic tapestry filled with dystopian visions, melancholy, and nostalgia.
The first track, “They're Coming” could be described as a modernised version of 80s-era Kraftwerk re-enacting a forgotten John Carpenter score. Next up is “Left Behind”, which is presumably what an attempt by Vangelis to interpret the trance rave scene of the early 2000s would sound like. The closer, “I’ll Find You”, carves out a hidden underpass where the New Romantic movement and The Batcave club meet at the break of dawn.
