Today, Awakening Records announces November 20th as the international release date for Eyes of Agony’s highly anticipated debut album, When They Return, on CD format.
Eyes of Agony is a death metal band created by Danny Cinicolo, founder of such old-school Italian death metal bands as Excidium and Maleficarum, whose histories stretch back to the ‘90s and even into the mid ‘80s. He started compositions for this project many years ago, and some tracks were also published on Danny’s YouTube channel (Danny Cynic), which – with 20,000 subscribers – received a lot of views and interest by death metal fans. That gave Cinicolo the conviction to continue composing more tracks for a full-length, and soon after, he contacted Andrea Zanetti, his old friend and bandmate in Maleficarum, and asked him if he would be part of this project.
Zanetti is a well-known veteran vocalist in Italy whose wealth of experience in death metal spans such bands as Iconoclast, Schizo, Monumentum (on the classic In Absentia Christi), Sinoath, and the aforementioned Maleficarum. After hearing some of Cinicolo’s new tracks, Zanetti was very impressed by their quality – so much so that he soon joined the project and, together with Cinicolo, started searching for other members to complete the lineup.
After contacting many drummers in the wider Italian scene, the duo finally got in contact with Davide Billia, one of the most professional and technical drummers in the Italian death metal scene, whose credits include Beheaded, Hour of Penance, Antropofagus, Putridity, and Septycal Gorge among many others. Billia accepts to be part of the band and records all the drum parts in his personal studio, MK2 Recording Studios.
To complete the lineup, Cinicolo next asked his friend Massimo Boffa – an exceptional guitarist whose credits include Mind Control and Halley – and Fabrizio Biondi (Jesus), a talented bass-player that was part of Mechanical God Creation, to join the project.
With Eyes of Agony’s lineup now completed, the members started recording their own parts for the band’s imminent debut album, When They Return. Featuring nine tracks across 36 minutes, When They Return is complete and total OLD-SCHOOL DEATH METAL – as expected from such an esteemed membership. And yet, Eyes of Agony are full of surprises, even with influences as firm as Incantation, Nile, Cannibal Corpse, At the Gates, and Death. For one, the quintet sound every inch a “real” band – that is, five guys playing together as one unit – despite the geographical distance. For another, credit for that must go to the band’s songwriting, which surges and slithers with malevolent intent – thoughtful, nuanced, hovering both above and below the linear, and dotted with tasteful & well-timed solos – all without losing an exceptionally evil, suffocating atmosphere. Completing the totality of Eyes of Agony’s first statement is the crisp-yet-punishing mix & master by Luca Nicolucci at Comet Broadcasting Studio.
How dark is Eyes of Agony’s future? Only they know...When They Return!
