Jeśli chodzi o death metal od Ruskich, to są dwie nazwy, które zaliczyłbym do przedstawicieli z najwyższej półki napierdalania. Oczywiście chodzi o Pseudogod i Kadavereich. Mniej więcej w podobnych okresie co ci drudzy, do życia powołany został Thanatomass. I też już srogo zaznaczył swoją obecność na scenie, wydając bardzo dobrej jakości demo, dwie EP-ki, oraz pełniaka „Hades”. (Czytaj dalej...)

Norwegian melodic black metal veterans ISKALD return with "Curse of the Mind", their sixth full-length album and the band's first-ever concept record, set for release on September 25th through Dusktone.

Following the acclaimed "Innhøstinga" (2018), the new album marks the beginning of a new chapter for the band after signing with Dusktone in early 2026. Available on colored LP, black LP, CD Box and CD, "Curse of the Mind" was recorded during the summer of 2025 at Strand Studio in Beiarn, mixed and mastered by Hallstein Sandvin, and features artwork by SG7 Graphics.

For over two decades, ISKALD have stood among the leading names in Norwegian melodic black metal. Now performing as a five-piece, the band expands its trademark northern sound with its most ambitious and immersive work to date.

Built as a conceptual journey, "Curse of the Mind" unfolds through four interconnected chapters linked by ritualistic invocations, exploring themes of psychological torment, inner conflict, fragile hope and ultimate sacrifice. Framed within a stark, Norse-inspired vision of Helheim, the story is mythological in setting but deeply psychological at its core. Helheim is not merely a place, it is the shape taken by inner darkness. The true battlefield is the mind itself.

The album unfolds in four movements, connected by four ritual Invocations:

I. The Other Realm – The Descent

Vast emptiness, fog and isolation.

II. Manifestation of Madness – The Prison

Doubt, fragmentation and psychological collapse.

III. A Burden of Hope – The Fragile Light

Strength found through accepting the darkness within.

IV. The Sacrifice – The Ritual

Before the throne of Hela, suffering becomes meaningful.

"After Chaos" serves as the gateway into the album and continues the journey that began with "Cycle of the Dying Sun (Dawn of Ashen Realms)". The collapse has already happened. What remains is silence, presence and the first step into what lies beyond. Rather than looking back at what was lost, the song is about standing within the stillness that follows, where something ancient begins to move once more.

The album "After Chaos: Nocturnal Vigil" is deeply rooted in runic symbolism, not as historical reconstruction but as living currents where the runes are approached as forces rather than mere symbols. That perspective naturally connects with my interest in animism and the experience of a living world filled with presences beyond human perception. "After Chaos" establishes that atmosphere from the very beginning and lays the conceptual foundation for everything that follows across the album's eight songs and eight runes.

Like the album itself, this opening piece asks the listener to slow down and give it time. It is meant to be experienced rather than consumed, allowing the atmosphere, the lyrics and the gradual unfolding of the music to reveal themselves. Dísa's melodic guest chants intertwine with my own vocals throughout the opening passage, helping to evoke the ritual atmosphere the song called for and inviting the listener across the threshold before the journey truly begins.

The "Nordic Embryogenesis" machine continues its inexorable march, and its sixth strike lands squarely in Sweden. AVULSED revives "The Exordium", a track as brutal as it is crushing, taken from CREMATORY's 1990 demo of the same name.

Dave Rotten himself comments the following about this song:

"One of the most brutal bands in the Swedish scene, without a doubt, was CREMATORY. Although they had already recorded a single track in 1989, "The Exordium" can really be considered their first proper demo, featuring four songs and an absolutely crushing sound. While most other bands were obsessed with following the path laid down by NIHILIST (ENTOMBED), DISMEMBER and CARNAGE, and, almost simultaneously, GROTESQUE (AT THE GATES) on the other side of the country, CREMATORY opted for a blend of Death Metal with almost Grind-like touches during their most chaotic moments, all wrapped in an ultra-heavy sound that placed them closer to bands like FUNEBRE, ROTTREVORE, ABHORRENCE or GRAVE.

Stefan Harrvik's vocals, who also sang on NECROPHOBIC's second demo and their subsequent EP, were simply monstrous and made him one of my favourite vocalists and, of course, one of my main influences. So, alongside the singers from FUNEBRE and GOD MACABRE, here you have some of the vocalists who had the greatest impact on shaping my own style. There were certainly others, but these were among the most important. The other three members would later go on to REGURGITATE, leaving only guitarist Urban Skitt, who, together with drummer Mats Nordrup, currently plays in GENERAL SURGERY.

I'm well aware that CREMATORY's most popular demo is the following one, "Wrath From the Unknown", which I also absolutely love. But this project isn't about choosing the songs everyone would expect or want to hear, it's about picking the ones that mean the most to me. And this first demo was truly mind-blowing, with a dense sound, a certain sense of chaos and an overwhelming filth that are precisely what give it such a brutally unique atmosphere. Unfortunately, after releasing a third demo and an EP in 1992, the band split up and never reunited".

Blazing a trail through the inferno, fists death-locked on the throttle, Montreal’s Skumstrike strike back with their second full-length, Flawless Intrigue from Hell. Inspired by grand traditions of backstabbing and deceit, Flawless Intrigue from Hell combines a lethal dose of speed metal with the gunpowder roar of thrash and death metal.
