Today, AOP Records announces July 31st as the international release date for Finsterforst's highly anticipated sixth album, Still.
For more than two decades, Finsterforst have been shaping their own distinctive voice within extreme metal, continuously evolving both musically and lyrically without ever losing their core identity. Their sound merges elements from a wide spectrum of heavy music—from black and folk-inspired roots to epic, atmospheric, and post-metal influences—forming a style they refer to as "Black Forest Metal": a blend that feels both deeply rooted and entirely its own.
Rather than fitting into a single label, Finsterforst's music thrives on contrast and fusion: crushing heaviness meets vast, cinematic atmospheres; raw aggression unfolds into melancholic, emotional depth; and monumental arrangements carry a sense of both intimacy and scale. While often described in broader terms as epic, atmospheric, or post-influenced extreme metal, Finsterforst deliberately transcend genre boundaries.
The result is a sound that is brutally powerful yet richly layered, where sadness, rage, triumph, and grandeur coexist within expansive compositions. Driven by constant progression and a refusal to stand still, Finsterforst continue to refine a vision that is as immersive as it is unmistakable.
The latest proof is Still, the band's first full-length in seven years and sixth overall. The preceding Jenseits mini-album, from 2023, showed Finsterforst at their most ambitious: a nearly 40-minute track broken up into four suites. On the nine-track / 78-minute Still, the Germans return to relatively more approachable song lengths, and the effect is immediate. As powerful and poignant as ever, their characteristic contrasts take their fullest flight yet, laying forth a landscape that's tinged with darkness and dreams, wanderlust and wonder, crystalline coloring and crushing heaviness. Compounding that power & poignancy are frequent excursions into folky, acoustic-led territory, further heightening the drama & dramatics central to their sound. And while their lyrics are largely still in their native tongue, one need not speak German to feel Still in their soul; drink deeply and Finsterforst's elixir is intoxicating, now more than ever. But, those who thrilled to Jenseits will surely want to drown in the 25-minute "Leere" here...and two surprise covers close the album, both done in the band's inimitable fashion.
