Today, Purity Through Fire announces October 19th as the international release date for Uhritulet's highly anticipated second album, Ruumissavotta, on digipack CD format.
In 2023, Uhritulet appeared out of the black with their self-titled debut album for Purity Through Fire. The work of one V.P., Uhritulet were much like labelmates Sarkrista, but in reverse: Finnish by geography but German in sound - specifically, the martial nastiness of olde-worlde Teutonic standard-bearers Luror and Hellfucked. Pure & proud BLACK METAL, no more but definitely no less, Uhritulet soundly struck a blow to modernity, harkening to clandestine days of the '90s underground.
Thankfully, very little has changed in the world of Uhritulet the past three years, and they return with their second album, Ruumissavotta. The recording on LP#2 strips back some of the rawness of the debut in favor of unique sort of clarity: cold and dead yet somehow alive, fuzz as sharp as razors but gleaming with malice, altogether still as physical and fully suiting the aesthetic. Uhritulet still largely move at a mid-tempo at their fastest, but much of the martial aspect has been intensified to the point of being BEATDOWN black metal. Indeed, Ruumissavotta bears the hooliganism so central to so many bands under the Purity Through Fire banner, but it's the subtle details that elevate Uhritulet above minimalism for its own sake - folkish, characteristically Finnish melancholy shot through the maximally-executed hooks and well-timed detours into quieter, cleaner territory without losing said malice among them. And even with a strident muscularity coming to the fore, the songwriting on Ruumissavotta simmers to a boil arguably even more so than the no-less-considerable Uhritulet; that V.P. brandishes some Isengard-style clean vocals occasionally brings the temperature down considerably, and adds a further idiosyncratic touch to his strictured-yet-textured songcraft.
Folkloric filth still against the modern world, Uhritulet continue to ruin your day with Ruumissavotta!
